Q: "Our 9-year-old Standard Poodle takes 1-TDC® daily for maintenance and preventative care. She's still very active with no mobility limitations, and she recently had an anesthesia dental cleaning with no issues noted. Can I administer the 1-TDC® capsule in her food, or should it be rubbed on her gums to be effective? I've been rubbing it on her gums, but giving her the capsule in food would be easier."
Great question, and one I get a lot, because topical application takes more time. Short answer: putting it in food is fine as a general systemic support strategy, but it is not equivalent to topical application for oral health specifically.
Why Topical Beats Systemic for Oral Health
When 1-TDC® is swallowed with food, it gets diluted through the digestive process and absorbed systemically. In the process, you lose the concentrated, direct contact with the oral tissues and subgingival bacteria that makes it effective for periodontal support in the first place.
Stick With the Gums, Even Though It's More Work
Since your poodle's concern is oral maintenance, I'd encourage you to keep doing what you're doing, it’s important to note that for topical application, simply squirting it on the upper gums is enough without any rubbing or massaging. This is important because if there is gum irritation, any form of friction can be painful.
The good news: even if she licks it off afterward (which is basically inevitable), you still get the benefit of direct contact time before that happens, plus some residual systemic benefit from swallowing it. You're not wasting the product either way; topical application is just the more targeted approach.
Technique Tips
- Apply a small amount directly to the gumline, ideally along both the upper and lower arcades where plaque tends to accumulate most (canines and molars especially). Watch this video to demonstrate.
- Let her close her mouth and go about her business, there's no need to hold her still for an extended period. A few seconds of contact per side is enough.
Bottom Line
Given that she's already comfortable with the process and it's part of her routine, I'd say keep the topical method as your primary approach, and think of food administration as a nice-to-have supplement on busy days rather than a full substitute.
